Why is my chat history disabled?

To be able to store your WhatsApp chat history on your BlackBerry, you need to have a media card/microSD card installed.

The following are some error messages that you may receive indicating that your chat history cannot be saved:

Media card is missing

"Some features like chat history are disabled because your phone's media card is missing."

This means that you do not have a media card installed on your BlackBerry. WhatsApp will need a media card to be able to store your chat history, so we recommend that you buy a media card.

To learn how to install a media card to a BlackBerry, watch this video.

Phone is connected to a computer

"Your phone is connected to a computer, so features like chat history are disabled until you disconnect."

This means that your computer is reading your media card. While your computer is reading your media card, WhatsApp cannot update or save your chat history. Please disconnect your BlackBerry from your computer in order to save your chat history.

Once you have a media card in your BlackBerry or your computer is done reading from it, please re-enable saving your chat history to your media card. Go to WhatsApp Settings > Media Settings, and make sure that Message History is saved to Media Card.

The media card has too many files without folders

"Your phone's device media storage has too many files without folders, so chat history is disabled."

This means that there are too many files on your media card, which can cause some problems with how the media card is read by WhatsApp. To resolve this problem, do one or both of the following options:

  • Delete some media files from within your BlackBerry Media folder.
  • In your BlackBerry Media folder, move files into folders: Select the file > button > Cut > Go to a folder > button > Paste. Alternatively, you can connect your phone to your computer to move the files into folders.

The media card is out of space

"Your phone's device media storage is out of space, so chat history is disabled."

This means that there is no space that can be used to save your chat history to your media card. You need to delete media files from your BlackBerry Media folder in order to make room for your chat history. If you do not want to lose your media files, you should email yourself those media files or connect your phone to a computer and transfer those files to the computer.

Your phone's media card is almost full

"Your phone's device media storage is almost full. To continue saving chat history, please delete media files to make space."

Your phone's media card is almost out of space, and if the media card runs out of space, WhatsApp will stop saving chat history. You will need to delete media files from your BlackBerry Media folder so that your chat history will continue to be saved.

You can check your phone's and media card's storage in: BlackBerry Media folder > button > Memory Use.
