How to request WhatsApp account information?

With the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the European Union and similar data protection laws worldwide, users have the right to request a copy of their personal data from various online platforms. WhatsApp is no exception. Users can request and download a report of their account information. Here's how to do it.

Requesting Your WhatsApp Account Information

  1. Open your WhatsApp application.

  2. Go to 'Settings' if you're an iPhone user, or tap on the three dots at the top right corner if you're an Android user.

  3. Tap on 'Account'.

  4. You'll see a section titled 'Request account info'. Tap on it.

  5. You will see a screen with a 'Request report' button. Click on it.

Your request is now placed. WhatsApp will take about 2-3 days to prepare your report. You will receive a notification when your report is ready.

Downloading and Viewing Your Account Information

  1. Once you receive the notification, go back to the 'Request account info' screen.

  2. Tap 'Download report'.

  3. A ZIP file will be downloaded to your phone. You can extract this file using a file manager app.

The report will be in the form of a HTML file which you can open in a web browser. The report will contain your account information, contacts, groups and any settings that you have changed.

Keep in mind that this report doesn't include your messages. To back up your messages, you need to use the 'Chat backup' feature under 'Chats' in the 'Settings' menu.

Remember, it's your right to access your personal data. Make sure you exercise this right and take control of your digital footprint.
