How do I use Group Chat for iPhone?

Group Chat lets you chat with up to 100 people at once. Learn more about Group Chat features below:

Creating a group

To create a group:

  1. Open WhatsApp and go to the Chats screen.
  2. At the top of the Chats screen, tap the New Group button. Note: you will need to have an existing chat before creating a new Group Chat.
  3. Type in a subject or title. This will be the name of the group that all participants will see.
  4. Add group participants by selecting (+), or by typing the name of the contact.
  5. Tap Create to finish creating the group.

Adding participants

You must be a group admin to add participants to an existing Group Chat. A group can have 100 participants. To add participants:

  1. Open the Group Chat.
  2. Tap the group subject to reveal the Group Info screen.
  3. Tap Add Participant... at the top of the participants list.
  4. Search for or select contacts to add to the Group Chat.

Removing participants

You must be a group admin to remove participants from an existing Group Chat. To remove participants:

  1. Open the Group Chat.
  2. Tap the group subject to reveal the Group Info screen.
  3. Tap on the name of the participant you wish to remove.
  4. Tap Remove {PARTICIPANT} from the menu.

Assigning admins to a group

Any admin in the group can make a participant an admin. A group can have an unlimited number of admins. To make a participant an admin:

  1. Open the Group Chat.
  2. Tap the subject of the group.
  3. Tap the participant you wish to make as an admin.
  4. Tap Make Group Admin.

Changing the group subject

Any of the group's participants can change its subject. To do so:

  1. Open the Group Chat.
  2. Tap the subject of the group to reveal the Group Info screen.
  3. Tap the current subject.
  4. When you're finished editing, tap Save.

Changing the group icon

Any participant of the group can change its icon. To do so:

  1. Open the Group Chat.
  2. Tap the current group icon.
  3. Tap Edit, then choose Reset Icon, Take Photo, Choose Photo, or Search Web to set a new icon.

Muting group notifications

You can mute group notifications for a specified period of time. You will still receive the messages sent to the group, but your phone will not notify you when they are received. To mute a group:

  1. Open the Group Chat.
  2. Tap the group subject to reveal the Group Info screen.
  3. Tap Mute.
  4. Select how long you'd like notifications to be muted.

Exiting a group

If you exit a group, you will be removed from the group but will still see it in your Chats list and you will be able to read the chat history. If you are the only group admin and you exit a group, a participant is chosen at random to become the new admin. To exit a group:

  1. Open WhatsApp and go to the Chats screen.
  2. Slide your finger across the group you wish to exit, from right to left.
  3. Tap More, then choose Exit Group from the menu.

Deleting a group

After you exit a group, you will see the option to delete the group. When you delete the group, you will no longer see the group in your Chats list and the chat history will be erased. To delete a group:

  1. Open WhatsApp and go to the Chats screen.
  2. Slide your finger across the group you wish to delete, from right to left.
  3. Tap More, then choose Delete Group from the menu.
